Concept selection process

The concept selection process and its results respond to the research question – “What are the central concepts of humanitarian practice?”  To ensure that selected concepts are relevant for humanitarian practitioners, the concepts have been identified and selected through a participatory approach, seeking to identify concepts out of the terminology used by humanitarian practitioners when they refer to what they do.

The central objective of this concept selection process was to ensure that the entries of the Humanitarian Encyclopedia have been selected through a transparent and participatory process and correspond to the needs of humanitarian practioners.  The three staged research approach was chosen to compensate the bias associated with each single research activity and to allow for a diversity of perspectives.  Of course, as with any research process, some choices can be further discussed while keeping in mind that we did our best to follow a bottom-up and open process.
