Prof Phil Connors

Associate Professor in the Faculty of Arts and Education at Deakin University Centre for Humanitarian Leadership, Melbourne, Australia

Phil Connors is Associate Professor in the Faculty of Arts and Education at Deakin University in Melbourne where he started in 2002. He is the founder and one of the two Directors of the Centre for Humanitarian Leadership (CHL) where he leads the Education and Research units. Phil is the Course Leader of the multi award winning Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) Humanitarian Responses to 21st Century Disasters and the latest FutureLearn MOOC Introduction to Disaster Management. Phil is the co-founder of the Graduate Certificate of Humanitarian Leadership, an innovative 8-months course that brings together the best of humanitarian practitioner experience and university academic rigour.

Building on his practice as Social Worker in low resources environments and his research, Phil developed a strong interest in Community development, both at local and international level. He progressively orientated his teaching and research the Development and Humanitarian nexus.

Phil’s expertise and research interests lie in exploring the transition from humanitarian assistance to development and what may enhance or limit local leadership in the humanitarian sector. His other area of research focuses on localization and more specifically in the pacific region. Following his growing interest in the both the development and humanitarian, he has authored several journal articles and book chapters.

Phil holds a PhD in Community Economic Development, and has more than 30 years of experience in practice, teaching and researching community participation across many contexts.
